Digital Monitor Connections Explained

DVI is the recent standard to connect digital flat panel displays. DVI supports both digital and analogue connections over a single cable. Former digital standards DFP, P&D, EVC are replaced.

DVI-I socket
DVI-D, DVI-I and DVI-A cables can be attached to this socket on a monitor or graphics card. The RGB analogue signals are located on the Micro-Cross contacts shown on the right side of the connector.

DVI-D socket (i.e. monitor)
ONLY DVI-D cables can be attached to this socket on a monitor.
DVI-I cables will not fit!

The Different DVI Connection Standards, Cables and Pin Outs

  • DVI-D LowRes - often found in the market in standard lengths, is a low-cost Single Digital Link cable for Digital Flat Panels up to medium screen resolution.
  • DVI-D HiRes (the DVI cable offered by LINDY) -- Dual Link Digital for Digital Flat Panels up to highest defined resolution like QXGA 2048x1536. The LINDY cable is fully shielded providing optimum shielding against EMI. The connectors use a patented RF-Block metal housing design.
  • DVI-A, Analogue - this very rarely used cable connects the RGB analogue signals only.
  • DVI-I LowRes, Analogue + Single Link Digital - the most common cable found on the market. Please note that this cable will NOT fit into the DVI socket on some digital flat panels!
  • DVI-I HiRes, Analogue + Dual Digital Link - this cable is very thick making it difficult and uncomfortable to use. This cable will NOT fit into the DVI socket on some digital flat panels!

LINDY DVI-D cables can be used with any digital flat panel display, and with any DVI graphics card! LINDY extension cables (Dual Link Digital) use the female connector with integrated Micro-Cross connector.

DVI Analogue Connection
LINDY DVI cables support even the highest defined digital monitor resolutions (Dual Link Digital), but they do not support analogue RGB signals. If an analogue connection is needed LINDY prefers to use the LINDY DVI-I to VGA short adaptor cables (Part.No. 41222) in conjunction with our high quality LINDY VGA cables. This is a more economic and higher quality solution, and also does not impose the distance limitation of 7.5m for DVI cable lengths.
Please also remember that DVI-I cables can not be used with monitors that use DVI-D sockets.

Up To 10 Metres Distance Between Digital Monitor and Computer
With LINDY DVI cables you can extend the distance for digital monitors with fixed cables and socket connectors up to a distance of 10m. Please note that cable lengths over 7.5m are above the recommended length laid down by the DDWG organisation who developed the specification. This factor also depends on the harware combination of graphics card and monitor as to how far this distance can be exceeded.
Please also remember that every additional plug-socket connection you make lowers the quality of the signal transmission. Therefore, especially at larger distances always try to use a single connection cable if possible. At distances over 5m typical problems with digital connections show up first as the loss of one colour (Red or Green or Blue), bad picture quality and finally a complete loss of synchronisation.

DVI Adaptors
LINDY Adaptors DVI<->DFP can connect older monitors and graphics cards (DFP type) with current models DVI type. Adaptors are available as DVI-plug/DFP-socket and DVI-socket/DFP-plug. LINDY uses short cable adaptors because of the mechanical stability of the connection. LINDY DVI<->VGA Adaptors are available as DVI-plug/VGA-socket and DVI-socket/VGA-plug.
